Meanwhile in engraving-land
« on: August 04, 2012, 12:05:22 pm »

It's a siege, I lower the drawbridge by accident, and squish my legendary miner and some other nobody. Well, I was bummed, so then I looked at two random (and adjacent) engravings in the bedrooms.

"Engraved on the wall is a well-designed image of Erith Gravelreleases the dwarf and dwarves by Rakust Zagodadil. Erith Gravelreleases is surrounded by the dwarves. This artwork relates to the election of the dwarf vampire Erith Gravelreleases to the position of mayor of the Books of Clinching in the early winter of 127."

Huh, I guess there's a vampire in my civ! Cool!

"Engraved on the wall is a finely-designed image of Erith Gravelreleases the dwarf by Adil Avuzkirar. Erith Gravelreleases is cringing. The artwork relates to the crushing of the dwarf vampire Erith Gravelreleases under a drawbridge in Blockadespray in the late winter of 127."

NO WAY

I love how they knew he was a vampire.

Is this good or bad?

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

Those little lemmings are gifted with the gift of foresight.
Also, they took his execution into their own hands. :)

Depends on how you look at it :

* He had an mayor that could be locked away with no need for food nor booze and could be the perfect diplomat for elves and would definitely be able to handle the imigration problem through the special welcome room ( ^_^ ).
* Loss of someone that would be able to deal with most zombies and other undead on their own!

On the other side :
*Vampire mayors tends to drain out a fort pretty fast in one way or other (tantrum spirals).
*They usually have pretty poor empathy and will often ignore (in my experience) wounded dwarves or give rather poor counsel / comfort to grieving widdows.
*Not being able to personally put up some "fun" use for vampires is a bit sad though!

Unfortunate Accidents only happen on purpose. This was an *actual* accident.

If it was a purposeful event, how would it be an *accident*?

I believe that's just a sarcastic saying or "killing annoying nobles". There's even a wiki page concerning "unfortunate accidents".

There's a reason why it was in quotation marks :P

Don't use quotation marks. Just use proper capitalization to indicate bay12-isms.
Clowns, Candy, Circus, Unfortunate Accident, Fun, Goblin Christmas. <- Like that.
Also, use Incendiary Exponents to indicate fire or magma. !!Unfortunate Accident!! would indicate a magma-bath.

There. A crash course in understanding the forums.

Hush now, it should be pretty damn obvious when we're talking about candy armour plated Dwarves we're not talking about walking pez dispensers, with or without the capitalization. Likewise, I've only ever witnessed one actual unfortunate accident. So by extension, if anyone ever mentions an unfortunate accident on bay12, you should know instinctively that it's an unfortunate accident.

I mean, how can you even tell one Urist from another if you can't tell the difference between an unfortunate accident and an unfortunate accident of the exact same meaning?

I once had a Actual accident killing a noble. My baron was a miner and I accidentally trapped him by forgetting a staircase. Worst part was he got out, ran to the well, and died a few feet from it.

This was an actual accident though. I was amazed at my luck/non-luck. What are the odds, eh?
