Getting a Laptop
« on: July 31, 2012, 04:25:49 am »

So, very soon I'll be getting a laptop, for going away to college, and I'd like some help picking the right one.

My budget is in the $700-1000 range. If at all possible, I'd like it to handle modern PC games the best I can squeeze out of it for that budget- and probably outclass the desktop I've been using for a while. (The desktop has an Athlon x2 2.1ghz processor, 4GB DDR2 RAM, and an ATI Radeon HD 4550 graphics card)

This seems pretty feasible, so I was mainly wondering if anyone had laptops they especially liked (or disliked) within that range, and any caveats to be aware of, as well as finding the best graphics/processor in the budget. I'm fond of the full-sized keyboards (with keypad) as well, for roguelikes mostly. Oh, and one more thing- it should ideally be available at the Costco in Missoula, Montana. We are hoping to literally buy the laptop on the trip out to college to dodge Washington's sales tax and save a hundred dollars or so.

You should easily be able to beat the processor and memory of that desktop. Hell, mine does and it was less than $300 (full keyboard and 10-key pad as well). I'm not very knowledgeable about graphics cards however, so I'll let others handle that.

One thing you may want to invest in is a cooling pad. Plugs into a USB port and uses fans to help keep your laptop cool.

Something to cool your laptop is a must, because seriously they can heat up to the point where it burns when you touch the touchpad if you play a game for too long, regardless of how good a laptop is.

Whatever you do, dont buy a Toshiba. I have had a few of them for work purposes over the last few years and have had a series of hard drive failures. Thier batteries are also brittle, and niggly faults develop with the power supply and power connector failry easily.

To be fair, it might be more down to the very heavy and demanding use I make of it.... :)

^ Not to complain, but I really wouldn't recommend an Acer.  They aren't well made, are failure-prone, offer laughable customer support, and are generally cheap for a reason.  Dell, Gateway, HP - I'd suggest avoiding those too.  Personally, I feel Toshiba laptops are quite good and I haven't had a problem with mine in five years (compare to a brand new Sony Vaio whose stock RAID failed within a year of purchase), but I may just be lucky.  I'd recommend an ASUS or Lenovo at the moment since they blend superior craftsmanship with affordability and good product support.

This one's in the same range as that Acer - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246628 .  Not saying 'You should buy that one", but it's a good processor and video card for under a thousand bucks and has the RAM to cover the recommended amount for most modern games.  It's got a number pad as well.  I don't know how to check the availability of that particular Costco in Montana, but there are a few comparable machines on their website with only a slight markup, like this one.

Remember that laptops are rather harder to upgrade than desktops, much more so, in fact (it can be done, but it's often a more involved process that can easily damage the computer by accident).  The neighborhood of $1000 should get you something that will last a long time and won't be too quickly outdated.  Whatever you buy is going to be cheaper before very long, so it doesn't pay to get the top-of-the-line-for-now, when all you need is the working-and-dependable.

Well there is a line of laptops called the Clevos that are designed so parts can be swapped out if needed by the consumer level, i don't know where consumers buy the barebones themselves but lots of companies do utilize them: Origin, Maximum PC, and Sager.

From that costco's site this is my suggestion. 95% size keyboard with numpad, IvyBridge i7, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB HDD with 32GB SSD cache, aluminum chassis, fingerprint reader, HD webcam, active HDD protection and external cooling (Coolsense ftw!)...oh, and the GeForceŽ GT 630M will run Diablo 3 at full speed at mid-to-high settings.

This laptop is a beast.

im really digging it (though the 630m is apparently a crapshoot as they got 3 different models out which you can guess is crap, ok, and sweet) especially now with laptop makers allowing 2 drives now...... damnit you won't convert me, NEVA!
