Seems simple enough.  The beasties tries to melt through the stone to escape the magma.  Never even heard of it happening before, I admit, but the picture is pretty clear.

Is there a ramp there?

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Wagons and their pack animals and driver move as a group, so if the wagon scuttles while it's center is 2 tiles from the wall, the pack animals will be stuck in the wall.

Using the same logic, it's possible to have a ramp-wall-magma setup that sets pack animals on fire as the wagons approach.

For some reason, this is in my opinion one of the most Dwarf Fortress-y thread titles ever.

You should have just flooded them with water, then the Water Buffalo live.

After the flood, make sure the Water Buffalo is walled in so he can't wander around.
Then dig a tunnel below him, and let him get free kick attacks on invaders, because melee people can't hit things directly above them.

Maybe this concept would work.

If the thing died and re-animates, will it still stay in the wall?

Melee people CAN hit things above them, actually. Being in a wall might affect LOS, though...

Nope. Apparently being in a wall leaves you perfectly capable of being killed by things above below and in front of you.

Is there a ramp there?
Well, it says there's a smoothed wall, not a ramp.

Regardless...

For sure.
