Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the "fortress mode" clock being slowed down by a factor of 10 or so.  Not sure what it would do to the game balance, or caravans that only show up every few hours instead of every 30 minutes.

(My forts usually settle into about 25-30 FPS long-term.)

I feel extending the timescale for fortress mode would ultimately be necessary when we get to a point where adventure mode and fortress mode are intermixed.

How about the fort is at "fast" time most of the year, and enters "slow" time whenever something important happens?

Overseer: why is my game slowing down again?
Corner of screen: C
Overseer: aha! a battle!
Spoiler: Combat Report (click to show/hide)

Cave adaption.

Also, a day is 1200 frames in fort mode, so at 100 fps you get:
It is now day.
(wait 6 seconds)
It is now night.
(wait 6 seconds)
It is now day.
(wait 6 seconds)
It is now night.
(repeat forever)

Our dwarves, when they sleep, sleep for about a week of game time :D

Also it takes them several days to walk down a long corridor :p

That's bizzarro.
