Word Processor Advice
« on: July 16, 2012, 04:23:45 am »

The story goes; my parents recently(-ish) reformatted their computer, and did or did not do (I'm not particularly informed about it, and their computer not-know-how doesn't make it easier to become so either) something that caused Word to fuck up and stop working half of the time. Since they're bugging me about it every time they try to use it, as if I'm somehow supposed to just know how to fix these things even though I know basically squat about computers myself, I thought I'd just get them some other, free, software to use instead of Word.

So, basically, I'm asking what you think of the different word processors that are out there, which ones you use and what their upsides and downsides are. I'm personally thinking LibreOffice right now (which I have downloaded for my own computer but never actually used), since based on screen shots it looks pretty much like Word (because recognisability is preferred when it comes to old people, you know), and it started development not too long ago and thus might go on for some time (though admittedly being newish might be a bad thing bugwise, I guess). What do you think and what would you do?

Aye, LibreOffice is the only choice for free word processors. It's the successor to OpenOffice in that regard, and they both resemble Word / WordPerfect. I'd say stay away from Google Docs.

I tried it out, and it seems recent. Definitely looks like the old Word, which is great.

Oh, and thanks for the answers.

Abiword is a quick, lightweight alternative if LibreOffice runs slow.
