Under the Dwarf Fortress 2012 wiki, it says:

Exotic - Requires special knowledge for taming

What does this mean?

it will be harder to train wild giant sparrows , and they won't have children , so they cannot be tamed .

I am currently investigating what Brainfreez is on. It is the greatest drug that any man, woman, kobold or pony has ever seen, going off of that everything he posts is pure win.

There's a new taming system in 2012. See the wiki article on taming.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I've gotten giant birds to produce offspring. It's a very irritating process though as trainers tend to yank the birds off the boxes and force the need to have them relaid.

I'm pretty sure there isn't one.  There is an article on animal training, however.

I believe that information was lumped into the training section.
