I think I may have found a way to make a boat. Looking through the raws, I saw that the wagon was a creature. Well, couldn't you make a boat a creature with really good swimming? I'm not quite sure if you could use a boat for dwarf transport, but you mgiht be able to get it tocarry goods, like a wagon. If this works out, you could construct an elevator!

I don't know if that would actually work.  Too much of this stuff is hardcoded.

Then it would drag the people who were riding it underwater and drown them...

But yeah, this won't work, mainly because any creature that is like a wagon (I.E has the EQUIPMENT_WAGON token) will look like a wagon, act like a wagon, smell like a wagon, and be used like a wagon--I.E, by merchants only. The wagon you embark with is a building, not the creature.

If you take the wagon tag away from the wagon creature you even get a normal 1 tile creature made of wood, with wheels as bodyparts. It can move, cant fight, and all in all boats are not possible it what I am getting at.

Well, I do remember sphalerites whalehunting boat, but that is a construction...

Well if you get enough speed on a minecart, you could skip large distances across water. (theoretically)

Ha, did you too gen an archiepelago world with too much of a distance between islands and forget that DF has no boats or easy way to cross the ocean?

the only way to get a 3x3 "creature" is to add the [wagon] tag, which makes it exclusively act like a wagon. Making boats are impossible.

Unless you're Toady.  This is one of his future plans, but a low priority so it's going to be a while.  Just as well, given the community.  Those forts that don't flood in an attempt to re-create Venice will find a way to weaponize boats by having them gather speed as they go down multiple Z-levels before shooting out the main entrance, knocking over two goblin squads and a line of trolls.
