Tanners crafting leather?
« on: July 25, 2012, 07:26:07 pm »

I just had a farmer go possessed and he claimed a leather works, except he has no leatherworking skill; not by default nor a job change by me.  He just came in a migrant wave and had a few simple farming skills, I added tanning and some others.

And yet, he claimed the leather works, made a quiver and grew to become a legendary tanner..

Yeah sometimes a level 10 armorsmith gets a mood and makes a goat leather loincloth or something.  Kids who have no skills can mood, too.

The first child I ever had go moody got a secretive mood, and became a legendary stonecrafter.  He was eleven (migrant a couple years before that), so I only had to wait a few months before I could assign him to crafting stone goods full time.  Well, that was the plan before the jabberers, anyway ...

What shop they claim is dependent on their highest moodable skill. If they don't have any, they'll become a random craftsdwarf.

Some skills claim workshops that aren't directly associated with their skill, though... Miners claim mason's workshops, tanners claim leatherworker's workshops, and weavers claim clothier's workshops.

Yeah.  This is why so many people like putting all their haulers to making just enough weapons and/or armor so if they mood they grab a forge.  I believe they need to get to Novice for this to work, but I don't remember for sure.

Nah, dabbling will work. My forts usually end up having a large number of legendary tanners, since that's a skill that I have enabled on everyone.

Only if that armoursmith has more XP in tanning or leatherworking. Otherwise, they make armour items out of metal.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I understand anyone can mood but it just caught me off-guard that a tanner will craft leather, or miners take mason workshops or whatever.  Never realized their moods were adaptable like that

Not that I'm complaining, I actually needed my (2) tanners to stop fucking around and get some work done so this works nicely.

No and yes.

Tanners get leatherworking moods. Generally, skills will take the nearest skill that actually makes stuff.

Oh, I think engravers claim craftdwarf's workshops as well. I've never seen it happen though, which is likely due to them having a reduced weight in the strange mood russian roulette lottery.

miners take mason workshops

I like to imagine the miner sizing up a lump of stone, then just going crazy on it with his pick until everything that isn't badass artifact is gravel and dust at his feet.

OP said his dwarf became possessed, and became legendary... As far as I'm aware, possession is the only one of the moods that doesn't cause an EXP jump...

ALthogh I had a fey mood dwarf make a leather quiver, and he became a legendary tanner, so i can confirm it happening

The Strange Mood article on the wiki should cover all of this in sufficient detail.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

They claim mason shops but the skill goes to engraving

Not true - when Engravers enter a strange mood, they take on the same job as craftsdwarves, and the job type determines which sort of workshop is going to be claimed (which, in this case, is a Craftsdwarf's workshop) and is also used in the logic for determining what item to produce (along with the mood skill).
