Off to a good start.
« on: July 22, 2012, 05:05:32 pm »

So after playing dwarf fortress as a roguelike in adventure mode lots of times I figured I would try out the dwarf fortress mode, I had only played it once before. Now a couple of weeks later I thought this time I will create a good fortress that won't die by water / lava / goblins in a instant. So when picking a embark area I saw a volcano with a nearby river / heavily forrested area. I saw that there was a aquiver which I had never encounterd before but what the heck, why not.

I embarked and quickly found out that there was a giant mountain where the volcano was comming from so I could just mine in there and build a fortress upwards into the mountain. This solved my problem of dealing with the aquiver for now. I was off to a good start chaneling lava for my magma forges  (which I also never used before) and made a pretty good start. Then everything went to hell. Or well I thought it all went to hell.

The dead walk again! Hide while you still can! What the heck, I found out I embarked near a tower and the dead were attacking. I saw 1 elf zombie ! I unpaused the game for a couple of secconds and still just one zombie. I picked up 6 dorfs from my still low dorf count fortress (18 dorfs) which had some combat skill and managed to zerg rush the hell out of it. After a while the siege sign dissapeared but suddenly a kobold corpse and a elf corpse showed up. I reassembled the squad and rushed it again. This happened 2 times until there were 4 zombies : A elf, kobold, bufallo head, bufallo hair.

In the last rush the necromancer showed itself and after a long struggle it was struck down. Adelacemade will flourish and live for another day !

Just thought I'd share this story with you since I was so lucky to only be attacked by 1 zombie at the end of the first year.
Cheers !

Dwarves always know the most appropriate reaction to Elves is to declare war.

It seems like that, my *dwarfes* always manage to piss of the elves. They also killed that corpse so fast, they must have been blinded by rage after seeing a elf.

Zombies are surprisingly fragile. A few good blows can more or less knock the animating force out of them. The trick is keeping them de-animated...
