First Migrant wave 100% military
« on: July 22, 2012, 10:43:26 pm »

Ok, so new fortress, going well... I just had my first migrant wave arrive...

7 Dwarves, all of them competent in a weapons skill, novice armour user, shield user, and dodger, with a small arrangement of other skills, although their weapons skill is the highest... EVERY. SINGLE. ONE!!!

Is this by any means a normal migration wave?

Edit: Make that 3 migrant waves, totalling to an extra 40 dwarves, each with the same layout of skills

Your civ was in wars or in wars currently. Thus the dwarves have military skills.

Hello,

would that mean,  military is retreating from an epic battle or something like that?

It's not normal, but it's not improbable. As I understand it most members of civilizations participate in battles throughout their lifetimes. As a result of this it would seem that they either gain combat skills from fighting, or the ones with combat skills survive long enough to migrate to your fort.

So this would be abnormal for any other version, but the increased number of combat proficient migrants in this version makes getting an all military wave not out of the ordinary. Now it WOULD be strange if none of them had any civilian skills to go along with the combat skills, since I very rarely see pure military dwarves migrating.

The earliest waves tend to be the ones that draw from historical citizens.

Basically the third migrant wave is often the overkill wave full of historical migrant heroes who've fought and won against everything in the universe. Twice.

Well, the best civilian skill between them was adequate carpenter... The rest were all novices.

Think I can look forward to a strong military fortress :D

Edit: They've already been put to good use... Scaring off the flock(?) of kea men and women... 3 Kea People Corpses, and I lost 15 cave lobster biscuit, and a wheelbarrow... Now to bring everything INSIDE

Second Migrant Wave: 6 Dwarves, same thing. I now have a total of 14 dedicated military, a miner, a farmer, a cook/butcher/tanner/leatherworker, a hauler/fisher, and a craftsdwarf for everything else... 6 dwarves holding up civilian tasks solo!!!

Migrants with military skill are nice for home-guard (that is, dwarves who are kept in inactive squads, who are thus normally working as civilians, but they equip armour and a weapon, and can be activated in a moment's notice). There's nothing saying they have to be full time military. The nice thing about dwarves with military skill, is they don't get upset about the draft when activated, if they have a civilian skill, they also don't get upset about being relieved from duty.

The problem is the lack of a useful civilian skill... Sure, it's nice to have a third carpenter, but not while I'm  still getting things going... two works quite fine.... And the number of fish dissectors!!! Since none of these skills are even close to high, I figure they'll do fine as military (which is starting to pay off... Now to get them weapons)

Yep, it's entirely dependent on recent battles. You may get a couple of dwarves who are have a great civilian skill and 3-4 great social skills, but aside from that expect nothing but novice/adequate civilians with competent in some weapon skill.

I prefer civs like this, because I train permanent positions from scratch anyway, choosing useful preferences... but if you don't dig it, you can always go into legends mode before embarking to find a civ that's only fought named badgers or something.

Named badgers...  Sounds like you need a full functioning military to sort out that kind of thing

3 waves of migrants have now come in... I'm up to 47 dwarves. Out of those migrants, all have come with the same general skill-set:
Competent weapon skill
Novice Armour/Shield User
Novice Dodger
=<Adequate in any randomised civilian skills

This is starting to get ridiculous!

I'm thinking that once I have squads of 5(?) of each weapon class, and a good number of archers, I'll just assign them to random crap
