Interspecies breeding?
« on: July 17, 2012, 07:48:02 am »

Hey I was wondering if it would be possible to mod in interspecies breeding. (I know this is most likely impossible, but I'm curious if anyone has worked out a way to do this or something similar). I was hoping to have animal men capable of interbreeding, and possibley give birth to a creature with attributes derived from each parent. Is there any way of doing this with castes or something? Thanks for your time and sorry if this seems like a stupid question.  :D

With castes... Sorta.
You can make multiple castes, each with an entirely different creature all in the same file.
The side effect of this is that you might end up in a society where a Minotaur and a Human can get married and have a Giant Cave Spider as a child.
It gets weird.

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Would be kinda wierd to have an invasion by this new "civilisation" consisting of minotaurs animal men humans elves and all sorts of insane shit... I guess not then :P Oh well.
Thanks for your help all the same :)

Yeah, except that your creature will only "birth" using the list of castes in your creature file.
If your file contains humans and minotaur castes it is 100% impossible for giant cave spiders to be born (because logicaly, they aren't listed as a caste in your creature file).
However, genetic trees and mutation in that sense haven't been implemented (and probably never will be), so you wont get humans with minotaur horns or minotaurs with man legs.
On birth and migration a caste is randomly chosen based the number of their POP_RATIO tag, this unfortunately means that it is possible for two humans to give birth to a minotaur.

As for your animal men, you can have animal men breed between them, but they would have to be part of the same creature, be in the same biomes and groups (you'd get groups of tiger, orca an mosquito men all together for example) and they wouldn't draw attributes from their parents in the way you'd think, so no evolution mutation.

Yeah that's what I thought. Thanks for the response :) I was thinking I could make up another creature (for instance, a reptile/olm man hybrid) and make that the child, but there's nothing to stop say, a fish man and a reptile woman giving birth to a batman/antman hybrid as they'd all be the same creature made up of different castes. Well there goes my plans for this hideously mutated multi limbed abomination :P Hehe.

Hybrids aren't possible for now, but [BABYSNATCHER] entity token can lead to similar results.

yes, but it's pretty hard, and might need to use utilities to get it to work. Bbut you could use interactions and turn another animal to another then get it knock up. There was reports of a dwarf married and giving birth to a fire imp.

I never even considered interactions actually :) Ah I'm not bothered to think that hard though. It probrably wouldn't work anyway...

It would be possible. It happened back in 31.25, and said dwarf married a fire imp and birthed a healthy dwarf. Granted, said pairing was only possible with the old Dfusion, but if you had a race-change interaction made, then you could get interracial couples. Granted, you would have to deal with the glitches by looking at it's appearance.

Well it was found that race changing through interactions where bug because both races didn't have a description for their castes. so the game goes to search for it but end up not finding one and crash.

Would it be possible to make a caste similar to the target race's in description and use that as the interaction target? Sorry, I'm a bit behind in modding knowledge for 34.11.

Hmm... I might be able to make a script with dffusion and tinker around with the interactions... I'll look into it :) Also slightly off topic, I've made a tigerman, but I've noticed that it has hands and paws. As seperate things :P I can't seem to be able to remove the hands and keep just it's paws. Does it have to do with the fact I gave it fingers? (Which I assume are neccesary for it to grip stuff or equip things)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Any idea how to remove the hands, keep the paws and fingers (paws with fingers that can grip things). Cheers :)

Hands and paws have [GRASP] by default, so this means that the tag gives them fingers to hold stuff with. You give them fingers with [GRASP] and they'll grow hands.

well my solution to this issue was that if you had 2 creatures that pretty much clones of the other you can switch over with no problem. if you took human and made a new creature off human designs the switch would work perfectly if you didn't mess with the facial features.  Though deon kinda found this out when toady officially added in race changing.
