As far as I'm aware it's a bug. A useful, inconsistant bug but a bug nonetheless.

In the far future of DF 1.0.0 in 2035 we might be able to assign combat medics through an advanced squad menu or using a mod to enable it. I'd be looking forward a Superdwarvenly strong, Incredibly Quick to heal, Superdwarvenly Agile, Almost never sick,and unbreakable will, Legendary Misc. obj. user,dodge,shield,armor user,Legend in all medical, and decked out in full adamantium slogging into battle treating downed soldiers and krumping gobbos with a platinum splint. Supplies can be hauled by the surviving medical experiments that trained him! =D
