Are my traps not working?
« on: July 22, 2012, 10:44:30 am »

Hi,
As part of my defense, I have set traps, on all entrances to my fort.
First a few lines of spiked discs, followed by cage traps.

BUT, it seems every attacker I have met, so far, just walks through these traps.
I haven't played for a while, but I am quite certain traps used to work on titans/goblins/whatever.

Am I doing something wrong? Have traps changed, if so, what are they good for now?

What creatures have walked past them? Sounds like a case of trap_avoid creatures.

Otherwise, check to see if your traps are forbidden. If they are, reclaim them.

Are your cage traps lacking cages, perhaps?

Most invaders should fall just fine to the traps.  Thieves as always are pretty good at passing them both stealthed and unstealthed.

Just a few brain-fart checks.

You designated the traps, has a mechanic actually been out to set them up?

Under the new hauling system I regularly have Hauler McMoron drag a bin containing all my masterwork serrated discs off to the map edge so he can collect a dropped copper spear.  This will cause cancelations/suspensions since the weapons assigned to the trap are locked up.

In the case of cage traps remember that a mech will turn up and build it with mechanisms, but it wont actually work until someone also brings a cage to it.

Check for jams - In the case of weapon traps, if a creatures dies on the traptile its corpse will jam the trap. This is why warhammers rule since they tend to leave it crippled so it crawls away or outright knock it off the tile.  For all that disks are awesome they scatter a lot of bits (though i think its whole corpse or perhaps a bisected one to jam the trap, small limbs dont seem to do it).  Spears suck.  Its a shame, they are excellent weapons but they jam amazingly frequently.  In my opinion due to the spears organshotting attackers who pass out on the trap and jam it as it perforates their unconcious form.

I wish I had something cool to say about this.  Because it's really cool.

Kobolds avoid traps, goblins do not.

If all you've had is kobolds then of course the traps won't appear to work (unless you web your cage traps :) ).

Most megabeasts (I think) avoid traps as well.

Maybe I am mistaken then, and it was kobolds that walked through, not goblins. I am not entirely sure.
A couple of titans have appeared, and walked right through, but I guess they are avoiding.

In my fortress, I can tell whenever a goblin thief has walked through from the bloody chunks on the floor :P Usually they're dead before anyone notices them.

And yes, titans avoid. But if you get a giant cave spider to make some webbing on the traps, it will trap everything except for titans/FBs with both web-spinning and trap avoidance. This includes any dwarfs not Collecting Webs, so be careful :P

You can even get a clown into a cage with that web trick.  I once had an awesome fort where there was a pillbox by my front gate containing a brutal syndrome-dust firing clown.  I just abandoned the surface, the whole concept of trade and migrants and moved everyone into the caverns to live insulated.  Never shut the doors (dwarves in a burrow) so everything hostile that spawned met my pet as it pathed toward the (theoretically) reachable dwarves :)
