The other way to improve FPS is to convince Toady to implement multithreading. At this point, a fully multithreaded DF would still run fine on your fortresses which have slowed to a crawl.

There has been some research into this and it seems that this does _not_ help because the items are still in some state of existence after the caravan leaves the map. (as a consequence fps get worse every time the caravan arrives with no getting better because what they bring also does not get properly removed from the game when they leave)
