"Set_Labor_Lists" What is it? What does it do?
« on: August 20, 2012, 05:27:40 pm »

Hey guys!

Newb question here, I was mucking around in the d_init txt file just to see what's up and I came accross this little gem. I have it under skills, which I assume means that immigrants come with those skills they are good at enabled by default, but I don't understand what the other option is. Can someone please explain? (NO is pretty self explanatory)

Also, what would be the pros and cons to each of the settings. Thanks for helping a fellow Dorf Overseer out!

The default option is skills, which, like you said, makes them come with skills enabled if they have a rank in it. BY_UNIT_TYPE makes it so that they have all the skills of their "type" enabled, so if a dwarf comes with any skill under farming as the highest, giving him the job title of Farmer (or brewer, planter, etc.), then ALL skills under farming, whether skilled in or not, will be enabled. This is useful if you like to open up the z-status screen and look at the column that has the number of miner, masons, carpenters, etc., and get an idea of how many dwarves will be up to what. Helpful if you don't care about the skill levels of individual dwarves(or just use multiple workshops with varying skill level requirements/limitations like I do, which requires a manager).

Might as well chalk it up to Pathos.
As this point we might as well invoke interpretive dance and call it a day.

WOW! I really like that! It sounds like just what I would want! Thank you so much for the help!

Edit 1: Do you assign workshops to certain dwarves? IE like it was their shop?

I never assign individuals to workshops, I find it to much of a hassle, I use the option to only allow dwarves of a certain level to use them, you can set the minimums and maximums with + and -, and / and *, if i'm remembering right.

That way I have forges that are only usable by smiths of at least high master, and only make weapons and armor from them, while using lower ranked forges for trainning my lesser smiths and making lead flasks, just make sure that your lesser forges have maximums put in, so your legendary armorers aren't wasting their time making chains when they could be making masterwork helmets.
