I tried to create an account on the wiki, but after filling out all the details needed, I get the message:
"Your IP address is listed as an open proxy in the DNSBL used by Dwarf Fortress Wiki. You cannot create an account. (my IP)"
I have no idea what this means. I don't think I am behind a proxy, assuming I know what a proxy is O.o

Wiki software disables torr account users access by default, because their IP addresses shift around like mad, making them impossible to block or confront in case they their blood runs blue and they turn trollish.

I have the same issue. I don't use any proxies or TOR, but my ISP distributes dynamical IPs to its clients. So most (if not all) of its addresses can be blacklisted by overaggressive systems (which, as I guess, runs on wiki). As result I can't contribute anything to wiki since that system was added (few months ago?).

And I don't think that massive blacklist-blocking is a suitable measure to fight with "trolls". Trolls are always specific cases after all. This measure is more appropriate to preventing spam/vadalization, though there is widely used AbuseFilter extension, which makes the same work without suppressing regular users (well, at least when it's well configured or mantained  ).

You can apply for an IP block exemption, ask the wiki creator for help.

I haven't had a chance to action on this yet (busy busy with work recently) but I'll compare the IPs sent to me with the blocklists we are using (we are using multiple).  I assume all of them will probably be on the same one, and will nuke that list.

By the way, if you're having signup issues, I'd recommend a virus scan and spyware scan as it only takes a single instance of spam to get placed on the blacklists.  They cycle out well behaved IPs.

I know the blacklists suck and we're actively trying to find a better way to handle this, but they do prevent almost 4k spam signups a day.

I used the internet at college to sign up for an account, but it turns out I've been blocked from editing due to my "unacceptable username"! I would try to raise an appeal against this, but I can't even edit talk pages, and the wiki software tells me that the block is "infinite".


I was really hoping to be able to improve the wiki T_T

Sorry about that, jimj316.  Your username looks exactly like the usernames that spam users have been signing up on the wiki with, so if we see one like that we have a policy now of ban first and ask questions after.  I know it sucks, but I've unbanned you now, so you should be able to log in without issues.

To all others having issues with the IP Blocks, I'm still working on a solution.  If you have a username that was banned incorrectly for unacceptable username, send me a PM and I'll sort it out.

I also got the "open proxy" message when I tried to create an account, and then it wouldn't let me edit talk pages anymore. I checked the spamhaus website (as suggested on Quietust's talk page) and my IP address was only listed in the PBL.

The first thing to know is: THE PBL IS NOT A BLACKLIST. You are not listed for spamming or for anything you have done. The PBL is simply a list of all of the world's dynamic IP space, i.e: IP ranges normally assigned to ISP broadband customers (DSL, DHCP, PPP, cable, dialup). It is perfectly normal for dynamic IP addresses to be listed on the PBL. In fact all dynamic IP addresses in the world should be on the PBL. Even static IPs which do not send mail should be listed in the PBL.
 

My ISP does provide dynamic IPs.

I'm really, really sorry that this has been affecting so many people and I'm trying to resolve this issue without completely overwhelming the wiki with spam signups (without the DNSBLs we use, we approach nearly 1k spam signups / day which is absolutely insane  ).
