embark- Metal: Yes vs Multiple?
« on: July 25, 2012, 03:11:38 pm »

I searched high and low, but cannot figure out what the difference in 'Yes' and 'Multiple' is on the Find Suitable Sites bit at Embark for Shallow and Deep Metal.

I've got a few guesses, but I'd love to know what it is.

Yes means it has metal.  Multiple means it has multiple metals.

This seems pretty straightforward.

I believe it's as follows:

Yes:  At least 1.
Multiple:  At least 2.

I think there also might be one or two non-metal materials that the finder mistakenly thinks are metals.

The 's' at the end of shallow/deep metal(s) is actually important. It's possible for an embark that only has shallow metal to only have something silly like sphalerite, whereas the risk of getting only useless metals is diminished if it has 'shallow metals'. It's one of those odd things that's hard to notice, but the difference can be very dramatic. If you're looking for specific embark conditions, I'd use DFhack's 'prospect all' command to see what minerals are available.

I don't think that's true. It's just that some stones appear as veins and that the finder does not tell you how much metal there is. For example cobaltite appears in the same layers as cassiterite. If you get an embark with mostly cobaltite and only a tiny amount of cassiterite you might get that impression.
"Metals = multiple" can mean a tiny bit of two ores, a ridiculous amount of every metal there is and everything in between.

Or it can mean cinnabar and cobaltite. So it seems to me.

Metals actually means non-layer minerals, IIRC, so cobaltite, cinnabar, microcline, orthoclase...

Or it could mean veiny minerals, which would still be cobaltite, cinnabar...
