Thing-a-Day :: Drawing random stuff
« on: June 13, 2012, 12:31:03 pm »

There've been a couple of these, and I need to practice drawing with a tablet. So, here's yet another drawing thread. It's probably going to be far lower quality than any of the others, but that can't be helped.

Any suggestions for things to draw?

If you're looking for a challenge draw either a bear, or a human face. Something easier would be a coffee mug with steam coming from it, or something from life. Always use a reference if you aren't familiar enough with something.

I made a bear!

Now - do a bear with a human face, holding a coffee mug!

(nice pic, by the way)

I meant shading a bear realistically is a challenge. :P

What kind of tablet and program are you using? I might have pointers if it's like the one I have.

Good picture by the way.

That may have factored into my choice to have it be a black and white drawing. :P

Using Photoshop CS5 with a Wacom Bamboo tablet.

Now - do a bear with a human face, holding a coffee mug!

I hope you realize the potential for this to turn out really creepy, but I'll give it a shot!

If you want to shade realistically you can turn down your opacity to around 10% and just use multiple strokes since you don't have pressure sensitivity. I'd also suggest this color wheel plug-in. It's a little old, but it works well. I haven't run into the bug it mentions, but then again I don't often drag image tabs into windows since I usually stick to one image at a time.

Actually, this tablet does have pressure sensitivity. The light grey lines in the drawing are with a solid black at 100% opacity. The plugin doesn't seem to work for some reason. I placed the folder into the panels folder within the plugins folder, like the installation instructions said, but Photoshop doesn't recognize it. Does it not work with CS 5.1?

If it's in the proper folder and installed it'll be under Window > Extensions > Painterswheel

If it isn't there I'm not sure what happened. I have CS5.1 and it works just fine.

It is... MAN-BEAR-COFFEE!

It didn't turn out too well. I still can't draw faces; getting noses distinguishable and being able to draw eyes still escape me. For the first time I've ever shaded something in Photoshop, I'm glad parts of it turned out okay, at least.

Also, it turned into a guy in a bear suit on break.

About the plugin, the files are supposed to be images and .jsx files, right? Just double checking, because nearly everything else in the other folders are .8BF or .8LI files.

Looks pretty good, although I'd have a look at his closer arm - it appears to be about half the length and width of the far arm.

Yeah, that was one of the more major screw-ups.

Also, any suggestions for what to draw?

How about your take on your own avatar? (ie, draw Red Mage)
