The Guild 2 -Renaissance
« on: June 23, 2012, 05:16:17 pm »

Hello guys, could not find any topic dedicated for this game, so here it goes...

I got addicted to the Guild (Europa 1400) years ago and finally bought Guild 2 series during Steam sales in February but didn't play it til last night. I have been playing Renaissance because that's the latest release. Mind you all the "expansions" are stand-alone and  has all the added features.

There are many game modes but I always play "Dynasty" so the game won't end unless the last member of your dynasty dies. The game plays like Crusader King at micro level. It revolves more around business sim than politics though. Politics exist but you must have strong finance to make your way up.

There are four "classes" and each has multiple career options: patrons, craftmen (trademen), scholars, and rogues. I played as a patron in Venice and started a bakery shop because hey everyone needs to eat! I got married at the age of 28 and opened a public house (like a restaurant) for my wife two years later. We also produced two offsprings. Unfortunately, I got infected by the plague (Black Death swept over Venice...) and died at the age of 30, leaving my wife as the widow and the only successor to my dynasty.

By then, 2 out of the 12 competing dynasties had died out (their last member died without having a successor). Ironically, one of them was a fellow patron, my greatest competition who held office title and hated me for spying on her. Her wealth was way beyond mine but she died just like that!

Anyway, this game is addicted! I am wondering if there's any other who's played this hidden gem?

Yeah, it's a good game until you get to a big city or start running a big trade empire.  The micro-management you need to do to stay competitive gets painful.  The city council votes end up taking all damn day.

Also there's so much going on in the city you'll various little mechanics aren't balanced well.  I haven't played it in forever, but I'm willing to bet there's some mods out for it that fix most of that by now.

Still, it's a quite unique game with LOADS of content, so I'd still recommend it to anybody considering it.

I feel like the rpg elements don't really work all that well.  All the running around town to do stuff that was automatic in the guild 1 is annoying.

Point of interest, the odds are in your favor if you know how to play the dice game correctly and there is no maximum bet.  I was able to amass an absurd amount of money doing that.

Worth getting it for a sale for a quick run through - I've got 31 hours on the entire series. It certainly had a lot of potential that it didn't fill, but there are few games with such an interesting political/economic advancement system, complete with spying that makes sense and trials that make things interesting. You could make a living off of bringing people to court.

However, several things make the lost potential very sharp. Limits the maps present (Nowhere to build anything, all resources already claimed at the beginning of the game), the lackluster RPG system (Stats were horribly unbalanced, traits were far too limited), the limit of controlling 3 characters at a time (And general family issues), and the tediousness of certain professions... They did some things right that are rarely done and managed to pull them off, but, like many games, it's more known for what it lacked than what it accomplished.

I seem to recall it being unplayable in multiplayer due to bugs, and boring in single player because all the other dynasties are push overs that die off on their own after a generation or two without any interaction from you.

Kind of like how M&B would be if nothing respawned and eventually all the lords just died off fighting eachother.

Did they ever fix those issues?

Renaissance avec les patches is much better in the AI departament. I just don't think it's supported anymore. It's been a while since I've played it, but I thoroughly enjoyed playing it in single-player.

EDIT: Apparently the patches are not worked on anymore, but here's the topic of the beta patch: http://forum.runeforge-games.net/index.php/topic,27.0.html?PHPSESSID=d2f8pf2lh5ol93e1m7b9dtu065 . They are fixing A.I., to quote:
Quote
- Changed AI-money saving behaviour. This has a massive influence on gaming and difficulty! tested + working
- AI aggression level slightly increased tested + working, could be a bit better
- Fixed a bug that caused the AI to not buy any title higher than Citizen tested + partly working

Also, Multiplayer is being fixed too.

This game has so many bugs, it would make The Elder Scrolls series look bugless in comparison. That was a long time ago though. It probably still has bugs but it's been a while since I played it. The Guild 2: Venice was worse.

You can't even run some of the shops because there isn't raw material. You have to make the raw material first and it's not easy at it sounds.

Hope you don't catch the plague. There's very rarely a cure available for it, unless you've happened to build up a hospital by yourself.

Renaissance did clear up most of the major bugs from earlier ones, though. I don't recommend any of the others, since Renaissance includes just about everything and is comparatively less buggy.

Regarding bugs, I have been playing this for about 8 hours and have encountered the following bugs:

Keyboard function not working after Alt-Tabbing.

Sick controlled dynasty member just walking around in the Hospital when instructed to get a cure. Fixed by repeatedly cancelling and putting in the instruction but it does get annoying.

AI dynasties dying off. Fortunately there are still non-dynasty AIs who are against you. I am too early into the game to have them take further action (Year 1616), but will observe and report back.

So far I feel the fun outweighs the bugs. I have four business running and one of my four children just came to age. Have three daughters and one son. Is four children the max you can get?

I wouldn't recommend having more family members than you need. The ones you don't control wander around doing nothing, and any money pickpockets steal from them is taken from you.
