Wheelbarrow for the Workshop
« on: June 09, 2012, 02:05:17 pm »

A job in a workshop can only be claimed by one dorf at a time.  This dorf is responsible for bringing relevant materials for the job in question.  These materials come from (post v0.34.10, usually) specified stockpiles.  Considering these facts which are already supported by the code, wheelbarrows assigned to a workshop could have this behavior and the associated interface within the workshop to support it.

The assigned wheelbarrows would act like a temporary set-able stockpile for inputs into the workshop.  This wheelbarrow would carry up to a single container(if applicable) of the set input.  The dorf involved would take materials from the wheelbarrow.  If the wheelbarrow is empty, a new hauling job would be set for this dorf.  This hauling job would check all the linked giving stockpiles.  It would assign every item of the appropriate time to be put into a common container that is put into the wheelbarrow.

This suggestion would solve these issues specifically:
-Seed haulers taking the only barrel of seeds.  Now the farm plot can have a wheelbarrow which stores most of those seeds.
-Masons and Smelters not having a wheelbarrow for a few steps of waddling.

Things this suggestion would make better:
-Craft decorator could have a whole container of crafts to decorate in a bin in a wheelbarrow.

This sounds like a pretty solid idea, if I'm reading it correctly.

I agree. There's a bunch of things wheelbarrows could be useful for but aren't, because they're underimplemented.

Has Toady said specifically what he wants wheelbarrows to do?

I don't think so, but there's a ton of stuff they'd be useful for that they aren't used for right now. Like constructions, masonry (and other) workshops, dumping objects, and bringing items to the trade depot, as well as everything else that involves hauling large objects like stone and logs but isn't storing the item in a stockpile.

How about being able to assigning wheelbarrows to dwarfs as equipment so they can always do hauling jobs.
Wheelbarrow dwarfs would be the same/similar as woodcutting and mining dwarfs.(As in caring there equipment with them when they have the skill on.)

Also a possibility, but I think the idea of assigning a wheelbarrow to a workshop (so anyone with that labor can use it), or from the 'o'rders screen for building stuff (so all of your masons can haul the clay to your megaproject wall easily), is also good. Both would be ideal.
