From my recent experiencies, even a badly trained squad of 6 dwarves with bronze equipment and 1 or 2 iron weapons can easily dispatch most forgotten beasts. Except if a fire-breathing beast breaches into the fortress, it's easy to kill them.
You have never, ever met a webspitting rock have you? Or one with a syndrome worth a damn.

I once embarked upon a frozen lake which proceeded to thaw the moment I unpaused. I wasn't on the map for 4 minutes before all of my dwarves, my supplies, and my chances at the embark were all drowned in the suddenly-less-solid lake.

You missed the replay of my fort with the buggy lava-above-bottomless-pits-bug where they were all dead inside 10 seconds.

I once embarked on the slopes of an active volcano, as in, the lava was pouring over the rim of the caldera. It rather quickly became an !!embark!!

It was due to some rare-ish bug when reclaiming, sometimes the lava level in lava tubes/volcanoes was (is?) set to several z-levels higher than it should be. So the lava just continuously spawns in the air right above the volcano and pours out.
