Workshop Movers (Really good idea)!
« on: June 04, 2012, 05:45:00 am »

I've noticed at a workshop when you have a number of jobs lined up the same guy has to get the raw materials for each one, this can get bad ina big fortress where the job change overs happen alot, so what if we had other dwarfs grabbing teh stockpileing in the workshops the raw materials for the jobs in the future, so a professional could show up and just get on with it instead of having to lug stone from half way across the fortress. Thoughts?

it would mean splitting, say, "Make steel bars" job into six jobs: bring fuel x2, bring pig iron, bring iron, bring flux, make bars. Of these, 5 could be performed simultaneously by apprentices attached to a workshop.
I like the idea all in all but I feel it's not worth implementing as is but would be better if merged into learning-teaching and apprentice stuff, so that dwarves who are hauling the materials are not just random Urists but blacksmith's apprentices.

If/when we ever get apprentices, making them do the unskilled grunt work is a good call.  In the meantime, it's called intelligent stockpile placement.  Don't store your materials halfway across the fortress from where they're going to used, especially heavy materials like metal and stone.  Store them near the workshop or project they'll be used for.  If you don't have room for a big stockpile near the workshop or project, make a smaller stockpile there that takes from the main one, so haulers can be refilling it while the skilled dwarf works.

my dwarfs don't seem to take from stock piles but take literally te furthest thing on the map, because there crazy like that, and instead of apprentices why not other dwarfs just lending a hand

So link the stockpiles to the workshops.  They won't have a choice anymore.

Well-put, weenog.

And, mugglewump0, adding "Really good idea" to the title makes you look like...I dunno, like you're trying to force us into believing that a mediocre idea is really good.

About the actual suggestion: Why wouldn't haulers haul the stuff to the forge? It's kinda what haulers are for. And dwarves should take the thing that they are closest to at the tme they get to that reagent (as the ghost flies, so it's not perfect). How are your fortresses arranged, so that dwarves go miles out of their way to grab ores and fuel?

You already could have set up stockpiles, and since recently you can link them as well. That effectively offers a cure for all workshop problems. The pathfinding needs improvement (taking the z-axis in account when selecting the nearest item, for example), but that's quite a tricky problem on its own. So for now stick with linking the right stockpiles, and let haulers haul.

Dangit I thought this idea was for (m)oving existing workshops/buildings to another location.
