Those dam Aquifers
« on: June 09, 2012, 06:03:53 am »

Recently i started a new fortress on DF 0.34.11 and i started on top of a Aquifer area. When i started i had a easy time setting myself into the nearby hills. As i built my fortress deeper into the ground i hit a aquifer and not knowing how to get past them i instead designed my fortress. After a some time i started making defenses, including a pit that has a 3 level drop. As the pit was being dug one of my miners breached the aquifer and drowned. (One of the starting 7) I didn't notice as i was working about another part of my fortress. After some time another miner came along and also breached the aquifer finding the first dwarf and drowned. As i have no idea how to get past the rushing water in the aquifer i just let the body's sit at the bottom of the pit. When winter hits the water at the bottom of the pit freezes and i send one of my last 2 miners down to break the ice and reclaim my pickaxes and socks. But things go horribly wrong and my miner disappears, i assume he/she froze. So i decided to forget about the pit but i noticed my last miner is also gone.  :-[ Its going to get FUN soon since i cant finish my defenses.

Wow, you lost 3/7 to aquifer ice, that's pretty impressive...

The miners are being encased in ice due to a (bug?), and you need to dig through in a very specific way. Read this, if you're interested in the technique: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Aquifer#The_freezing_method

I was really hoping for a terrible pun here.
