You should get saplings outside every spring, and these take three years to grow -- the map also starts with some 1-2 year saplings in place.  The inside river also starts growing large mushrooms after 3 years, and you can put floodplains in place to encourage this.  You can also go for coal in the mountain to eliminate the need for wood, and eventually deeper down for alternative fuels sources...  no...  not uranium...

Nah, they just come in from the wilds or something.

Taking out lots of trees drives animals away, doesn't it?  Not that that's a bad thing most of the time...

I think it used to, but I got rid of it, because testers just paved the outside like a parking lot to get rid of nature.  Creatures should still wander in from the edges if you do that, since that kind of thing happens.

Bah!

...well I was sort of planning on exploiting it the same way they did, so I suppose it makes sense.    ;)

I haven't really been having problems with animals in the latest version anyway...  I've just seen some warthogs in my current calm area, and a group of military-type dwarves who arrived in the last migration have been killing them no problem.

Oh.  I've been 'hunting' using the military interface--forming a squad, sending them over to kill the animals, and then ordering another dwarf to build a completely new butcher shop right next to the corpses so I can butcher them.  Hey, building shops is quick and cheap, so it works, although the outside in my world is now utterly covered in butcher's shops.

Technically, there's no such thing as being completely independent on wood.  Beds and buckets must be built out of wood.

Wooden beds are the only lasting problem. You can create metal buckets once you have some.

Ah, so?  I never even looked in detail at the possible constructions at the metalsmith.  Guess I should look again.

I think Masons can do chairs. I haven't actually built a Throne yet, but if chairs aren't limited to wood, they are probably almost the same.

I already knew about chairs.  Beds, however, have no equivalent in any other material.

(Say, I wonder if cloth could be used to make pallet-type beds at a clothworker, however.  That way even someone on a desert map would be able to make beds beyond the few pieces of wood they get from their wagons, once they had a farm going...)

I think aquillion suggested silk hammocks.  In any case, something needs to be done about the glacial/desert maps.  The wood challenge will still be there if more bed types are added, probably due to the smelter, and in any case, maintaining a particular type of challenge game will always fall to the lure of new additions probably.  But in any case, there are always fewer trees on those maps.
