Infinte Tower of Falling
« on: June 07, 2012, 11:56:45 pm »

I was trying to get into the catacombs under a human capital.
When I entered the building, I greeted the Feathered Zebra god, and went down the stairs.
Eventually, I reached the bottom, but I was not in the catacombs.
I knew that an entrance to the catacombs was supposed to be here, because I had sent other adventurers to glory and death at the hands of goblins.
The only way down that I could see was through hole.
Being kinda confused, I decided to jump into the hole.
What happened BLEW MY MIND.
I jumped into the hole, and landed on an upper floor.
WHAT!?
I checked, because I went down the stairs again, and found the pit I had jumped into, and jumped into it again.
Suffice to say I was unable to try it a third time, what with breaking reality being rather deadly to a mortal.
THIS GAME IS BREAKING PHYSICS NOW!

Does anybody know what might have caused this?

Sounds like someone punched you hard enough to send you back up high enough?

If I might venture a guess: DF stores map data in "chunks", and when you reach the edge of one, you move into the next. In many open-world roguelikes that I know of, each Z-level is its own chunk; I think DF has 64x64 X/Y chunks. I think the chunk that you fall into incorrectly transfers you not to the chunk below, but to one above you.

EDIT: I should not that I'm also guessing with regards to how DF stores its map data, i.e. the "chunks" thing.

I've written bash scripts to make using DF easier under Linux!

DrKillPatient's theory may be valid, that's like the common explanation to the 100z above ground spoilerite spire bug, so much spoilerite was placed at the bottom that it fell through and emerged in the sky, crashing as a cave-in on the surface upon embark.

Either way, that's just cool :D I'd be jumping into it for a while, Lol.

Is it because light travels faster than sound,
that people appear bright until you hear them speak?

Probably Armok....

How do I post a save?
If some one could point me towards a free file hosting site or something, I would be happy to oblige.
