how to get rid of the water in my waterfall?
« on: June 01, 2012, 04:11:13 pm »

so i ve made a waterfall in my fortress. the water comes from a river. But how do i get rid of the water once its fallen down ?
all i can think of is to dig deep and find a cavern somewhere, but even that may not be enough. eventually it will fill up.. right ?
ive looked at the wiki, but afaik it only describes a closed system where the water is pumped back up again. with me taking water from a river thats not neccessary.. or do i have to make a closed system ?

any and all help appriciated.

In many cases (maybe all cases), water in the caverns has an unobstructed path to the map edge in at least one place.  Drain the water into that and it goes away completely.

It would also be possible to drain the water into an aquifer, if you have one.

A dwarven atom smasher controlled by a repeater could annihilate some water for you, if necessary.

The best thing to do would be to pump it back into the river so that the river still stays mostly full, thus reducing lag more (7/7 tiles don't cause lag, it's just the changing tiles at the ends of rivers or in the middle where you are draining it that do). An alternate way would be to dump it off into the caverns and let it run off a map edge. A third way would be to drain into an aquifer if you have one. One final way would be to dig out to the very edge of the map, and then smooth and carve a fortification into the last tile. This will allow water to run out through that tile.

Personally since the dwarves don't care about having actual water, just the mist, I tend to build mist generators instead of waterfalls. They use less space, take only 1 block of water, don't cause near as much lag, and can actually spread mist over a larger area (unless you have a waterfall that passes through several forum layers).

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

theres no aquifier on this map.

but.. you say map edge? two questions then.
1. will water flowing towards the map edge drain away by itself ?
2. i am unable to dig to the map edge. theres always 1 tile on the edge that i can never seem to dig out, is that enough?

Fluid that hits the map edge unobstructed flows off the edge and out of the map, essentially gone forever.

That last tile you can't dig out is the one i2amroy means for you to smooth and carve fortifications into, if you opt to dig your own drain.

thnx for the help lads. much appriciated.

my waterfall ends about 10-z levels beneath the river. toomuch work to pumpt it back up again. For now ill dig towards teh map edge and use the smoot+fortification trick. if theres too much lag ill consider the pump option.

again. thnx :)

You can't dig the last square, but you must smooth it and carve a fortification for water to flow through it and off the map.

The last block, on edge, is only smoothable, with d-s keys.  We cannot dig it.  Once its smoothed, it can be turned into a fortification, with d-a keys.  Fortifications leak water through them, in this case right off the map.  Its the perfect drain.  I like to smooth all three blocks forming a T, on the edge, top of T, along the edge, then fortify the tee top three blocks, for speedier drainage.  Knutor

In the current version, water does pressure-path off the edge of the map, so a fortification drain should be able to handle whatever volume of water you can throw at it.

Letting it drain out through a cavern is going to make your FPS drop like a rock.  Better to run a drain tunnel through rock to the map edge and let it drain out through carved fortifications.

...isn't that what I just suggested?
