Dwarves Being Morons
« on: June 05, 2012, 05:00:34 pm »

Everytime I embark near a waterfall, atleast one dwarf flings himself off it. Repeatedly. Until they die, or attract some other simpleminded dwarf to jump after them. It used to be really annoying, until my entire fort decided to just suicide in to save the others, or 30 seconds into an embark my farmer decides to his new job is to commit suicide. Is there a way to stop this?

Forbid your own dead and death items.  Disable Recover Wounded for all dwarves.  Don't tell dwarves to do stuff on the other side of the water until you've got a safe way to cross set up.

It's useful to keep a ‼torch‼ handy.

To start with, burrow your dwarves away from the waterfall. Then floor over the waterfall itself.

It's supposed to be fixed in new fortresses generated under 34.11.  For the older versions, all you can do is try to build walls to keep them away, or possibly use DFHack to make obsidian walls along the shallow part.  If you do it with Dwarves, you have to be careful because the idiots will walk into the water to build the walls, too.

Edit:  Or floors, as above.  Anything to keep them from thinking that the shallow water is a Good Idea.
