A minor note: Your jewelers can't go straight to the right -- their workshops block the path.
Thats why I have the workshops set up like this:

The workshop can be accesed from all four sides so if one side is blocked by the workshop it really isnt an issue as the dwarf is surrounded by material to use.
And for your plan to make families live near workshops: See those extra, unused 3x3 spaces next to the workshops on the bottom right? They can be used as rooms or extra workshops depending on the need. For this fort I opted to just have everyone sleep in the same floor due to vampire paranoia, but the walls can be replaced with fortifications so that any hauler can check up on your sleeping dwarves.

I mean that skilled (and thus valuable) dwarves will have their own stockpile/workshop/house complexes, along with their nuclear family. This is just about the romantic notion of skilled craftsdwarves keeping their own businesses etc. Eh, I'm such a softie. (Though I now realize that vampiric incidents will be more mysterious... not bad.)

Also, the dregs of my dwarven society (haulers and other non-essential or less-skilled workers) will live in communal bedrooms close to the surface, possibly in soil.

My current design is rather unimaginative, a 5-wide corridor with workshops on one side and entrances to 10x10 rooms for raw material stockpiles on the other.
Forges go on a different lever, but have the same basic layout, with a magma channel underneath if available.
I also dig out a big space next to the trade depot for finished goods stockpile and another near the stairwell of the workshop level for furniture.

I've been using 5x5 spaces with the workshop in the middle surrounded by a supply stockpile.  It's set up with doors to seal dwarves in in case of a failed mood, and 5x5 usually allows for a decent amount of raw materials while also preventing problems with impassable tiles.  I've also been setting up storage stockpiles underneath the workshop to encourage dorfs to take from the proper stockpiles, I have stone stockpiles underneath my mason workshops and finished good underneath my jewelers.  Farming-related stockpiles use a similar setup, but they get connected when there are related industries, so the butcher, tanner and leather worker are chained together, as are the dyer, weaver and clothier.

I have a big stockpile in the middle for ores to supply the furnaces, but that's not that good now with the hauling changes.

The way I do forges is with an 11x11 central warehouse for metal bars, with three smelters on each of three sides and six forges (two rows of three) on the fourth.  One group of three of the smelters do nothing but steel-related smelting (make iron, make coke, make pig iron, make steel), and behind those is a 1x11 stockpile for the appropriate reaction inputs with a quantum stockpile at one end being fed by a minecart.  Another group of three does all the other smelting from ore jobs, with another 1x11 stockpile for ore inputs, again with a quantum stockpile at one end being fed by a minecart.  In the third group two of the smelters do smelting from bar jobs, and the third is used exclusively to melt things.  Behind that group is a 1x11 stockpile set to receive meltstock.  I don't bother with a minecart for that one. 

I also put nine glass furnaces into an 11x11 room with sandbag storage in the spaces between, and three kilns into a 11x4 room with the last column being used for a 1x11 stockpile holding kiln inputs (clay, kaolinite, gypsum stones, and potash bars) again with a quantum stockpile being fed by a minecart.

I am rarely efficient and more IC with my workshops; I set up guilds, hunting lodges (complete with useless kennel), gladiator pits. Clothing stores for the rich dwarves etc. I tend to see workshops as focal points helping define the identity of an area (whereas stockpiles I tend to put out of sight and out of mind on a non-hotkeyed z-level above or below the workshop).

I put my butcher's and tanner's shops at the surface, and build my main workshops three z levels down.  I have a long hallway, with large rooms branching off.  Each room has a stockpile with a given material (Wood, rock, cloth, leather, metal, and other stuff).  I then put most workships centered around those materials in those rooms.  The heavier a material is, or the more important it is, the closer it is to the central staircase.  The first room is always the stone stockpile, on account of how heavy it is now, and the wood stockpile, because of how far off the sources are.  Next come the metal stockpile, and after that it is mainly whichever industry comes first. 

M stone room, for example, will look like this-

I either make 3x5/5x5 rooms with 2x3 'dents' in the walls for workshops withhe middle of the room as walkway and stockpiles, or i simply make 3x3 rooms, build workshops then put a door where theres a passable tile. I find it nicer to make close hallways and small rooms. I like to imagine being in the fort itself. It helps me feel more comfortable about digging out a non symmetrical fort.
