they can hold one fifth as much as a minecart if a minecart can hold 5 items!

The wiki says that a minecart can carry as much as 2400 rolls of cloth or 100 stone blocks. The wiki calls that "an enormous amount," and yes, I'd agree. But now you're trying to tell me that it can carry only FIVE ITEMS?

Something's wrong somewhere, and I don't think it's my math.  :D

I don't know the answer either, but just a guess: perhaps when it says 100 stone blocks, it means 5 bins, each containing 20 blocks? Bins have always counted as a single item for hauling purposes, even before the recent hauling changes.

As far as the 2400 rolls of cloth, no idea, a bin certainly doesn't hold 480 of them.

Do dwarves do that? Put bins in wheelbarrows, I mean. Seems highly redundant to me if they do.

Wouldn't be redundant if it was a bin full of lead bars...

Indeed.  There's great advice in this thread.  Wheelbarrows for blocks/bars/furniture/stone...but not for seeds or plants or food.

Yeah, until it starts loading multiple items they'll really only be useful for heavy stuff.
