I think the term you're looking for might be "core sampling", Nyan... didn't think that was a verb either but search finds it used that way.  Which I wouldn't mind a faster way of doing than the shaft digging we have now.  But none of this zero-risk, no water, no magma, no HFS x-ray vision stuff.  That's just weak.

I think the solution to safely circumventing HFS would be that if you accidentally cored yourself into hell, you would still unleash the circus. Reason probably could be that the layers just broke or something. Or just make it uncorable, I guess. Maybe?

Well, you already 'prospect' down if you designate down or up/down stairs - when they dig it out, you discover what kind of rock it was without bypassing into that level. I was more thinking of prospecting in the cardinal directions, not up and down so much.
