HAUL GODDAMNIT! HAUL!
« on: May 25, 2012, 03:53:14 pm »

hauling is great now, im not complaining about that, its the fact that my dwarves just don't do it. at all. Ive got my stockpiles set up (I know I know, jegus, a man can use real stockpiles cant he?) and the dwarves have hauling enabled, I haven't touched the work orders menu or turned off the hualing of stone. ive got around 10 or 11 wheelbarrows, but only one dwarf seems to be collecting the various stones that I desperately need for block making... is any one else having trouble getting the little buggers to pick up those rocks? btw, its JUST stones. they collect logs and other items fine, but they wont pick up the rocks.

Do you only have one wheelbarrow assigned to the stone stockpile? You can use q -> w to assign up to 3 wheelbarrows per stockpile. If you want all your dwarves to haul stone, you need to make a few stockpiles rather than just one, and assign three wheelbarrows to each pile.

Make sure the new stockpile settings are sending/taking goods to/from the right places.

That has been the biggest problem for me since the new system; I keep forgetting to allow workshops to take from specific stockpiles.

I had no problem with it in my fort (small 2x3 stone stockpile next to the mason shop, another next to the craftsdwarf shop, and a third next to the mechanics shop).  I did notice that without a wheelbarrow they move at about 1/3 normal speed (~30 ticks per tile, instead of ~10), however.

I have a question:
If an item can normally be carried in a wheel barrow, will Dwarves haul the item to a stockpile without using a wheelbarrow, because all of the wheelbarrows for that stockpile are already in use?

Depends on the stockpile and the item.  For example a sock will first be put in a bin and then the bin will sit on that spot until a wheelbarrow is open.  In my experience, it's really only useful to have wheelbarrows enabled for heavy item stockpiles, such as Furniture (if you make your cabinets out of lead/gold like me), Metal bars, and stone.  Otherwise, your better off letting the dwarves handle it by hand.

Edit: and to actually answer your question, afaik, no

wow. thanks guys. the stone stockpiles are all set to use only one wheel barrow at a time. if I set the max to 0, will they use all the wheelbarrows? or is the max 3 at a time? I hate it when my dwarves are idle.

oh good lord, I turned off the need for wheelburrows and they all took off towards the loose stones. so ive got them set to use 3 at a time and split them into multiple stockpiles. again, thanks.

If you set the wheelbarrows to zero, they won't use wheelbarrows at all and do things the old-fashioned way. The max is, sadly, three.

One thing I've had a lot of luck with is using multiple small stockpiles (as you do), setting them all to three barrows, and then having a mini mine track to pull from all the small piles for quantum packing.

I haven't had much luck in splitting my stockpiles up into smaller ones. It helps, but there are still unused wheelbarrows sitting in the stockpiles and idle stone haulers. I think it has to do with items still prefer to be sent to the nearest stockpile, even if all the wheelbarrows are in use for it.

Most efficiently would probably be 4 or so stonepiles with max barrows. That would allow 12 wheelbarrows to be used instead of 3 or 0.

Ofcourse if you have the dwarfpower hate your dwarves simply having them haul could be most efficient.

The problem i have with 34.10 is that my retards take bins out to collect stuff, but what happens is they mix different quality levels into the same bins, and because i have my stockpiles separated into quality tiers i have bins laying all over the place as there is no one place that accepts for example every cloth quality tier. It seems the game just sees "cloth bin" and so sticks any and every sort of cloth into it. They also have a habit of filling fresh bins with multiple different items, ie bars and cloth together, and so again they just sit around not being able to be moved into a stockpile.

This is a 34.07 fort moved into 34.10 but i don't see why that should effect it like this.

You need to change your stockpile setup to work well with the new version. First you need to have a set of "sorter" stockpiles that are set to only accept cloth of a specific quality and have no bins assigned. Next you need a main stockpile for each sorter stockpile with bins enabled and set to only accept cloth from the sorter stockpile. Apply this to every stockpile setup and the hauling will be a lot smoother.

I'll give that a go, trouble is this means needing like twice as much space(maybe more due to no bins on the quality tier sp) to achieve the same result, hopefully it'll be fixed though as it can't possibly be intended to work like that.
