A few days back I learned that my cousin got mauled by a tigress when she tried to pet one at a safari. My first instinct was to laugh my ass off but I had to restrain myself because people told me that was a cruel thing to do regarding this sort of thing.

I can't really answer your question any better then what's already been posted, but... um, is there any backstory here, or is your cousin just an idiot?

My response would probably be something to the effect of "They did what? Why the hell would they do that?"

The backstory was that the tigress was still technically a cub and was supposedly trained to be sociable. But you were still not supposed to touch one anyway.

All the people I mentioned are fine by the way. No one is dead or anything.

Well if nobody is dead or seriously injured, people who get angry at you for laughing about it are just humorless sticks in the mud.

I don't think people will judge you too hard for your reaction as long as you don't, like, make light of it.  Something like "I'm sorry to hear that" along with an expression of your hope that they get better and agreeing that what they went through was bad should be fine.

The right reaction is to cry. Laughing is very easy to smoothly morph into pretend crying.

A lot of the signs are the same, your face is probably red and completely agape.

It's like "ho ho ah ho ohhoohooh Oh MY GOD THAT's TERRIBLE *sob*"

Since you probably have a really wide and silly grin, showing all your teeth, try curving the edges of your mouth down, that will make you look very constipated, which is the correct expression for tragedy.

In all seriousness, the old schtick about laughter being the best medicine is true in that being able to laugh and joke about something makes it easier to deal with. At least, it works for me. I know that if I couldn't laugh at my own mortality, my only alternative would be soul-crushing despair. While we yet live, let us laugh and be merry, for eventually we must die. Neh?
