Confused about minecart stops and dumping
« on: May 28, 2012, 04:30:15 pm »

So I want to make a loop of track, where a dwarf will load up my minecart from the stockpile on the left side, push the cart north, and the cart will travel counterclockwise, dump my items on the right into a hole (there's a stockpile underneath), and continue back to the initial stop. What I ended up doing is using a single stop in the route, at the left, and put a Track Stop item with the settings lowest friction and dump east. I set the route stop to take from the stockpile on the left side. The problem is, I don't think the objects dropped in the hole actually are placed in the stockpile underneath the hole, is there a way to do this? I tried making a second stop, but then the cart actually comes to a stop and needs to be pushed.

Also, what exactly does the "give to a stockpile" setting do?

Give to a stockpile?

"Give this to a stockpile."

"Okay, I'll drop it off on my way to the exit."

So let's say I have a track:

Code: [Select]
1             2
S-------------T-----------------S
The S is a (route) stop, and the T is a track stop which is programmed to dump items to the north. 1 and 2 indicate stockpiles. If my minecart starts on the stop at the left, and I give the instructions

Stop 1 (left stop)
Push east immediately when 50% full
Take from stockpile #1
Give to stockpile #2

Will the items end up in stockpile #2?

You have set up "stop 1" to give to stockpile #2. A dwarf will then carry items from the cart at stop 1 to stockpile 2. The cart will never be full enough to be pushed.

If the cart drives over a "track stop" which dumps the contents, all of the contents will be dumped regardless of what they are.

No. The give to stockpile 2 setting means that whenever the minecart is at stop 1, it will have a dwarf carry anything that it contains that is wanted by stockpile 2 to stockpile 2. The current way your orders are set up, the minecart will never be pushed, because as soon as anything gets put in the cart, it will get carried to stockpile 2. If you remove this order, then when the cart is 50% full, it will get pushed, going past the track stop, which will dump ALL items into stockpile 2. There was a design passed around a little while ago for an auto quantum dump like this.

TL;DR

Remove "give to stockpile 2", search for "auto quantum dump" for a good design
