For what it's worth, I let my vampire make her artifact. The cell next door was empty, so I built a metalsmith's forge in it, stationed some military dwarves there (just in case), then broke down the wall between the cells.

I kept both doors locked and the vampire assigned to her burrow (extended now to cover both cells), until she chose that particular forge for her construction. Then I let her out to gather materials. She seemed to be pretty slow at it - partly because she had to go clear down to the bottom of the map a couple of times and partly, I suspect, because she'd been months without blood.

Anyway, I assumed that my military guarded her every step of the way. (Since that's not actually possible, I just let them get back to training.) Once my vampire started her construction, I locked both doors again. (Oh, first, I put a door in the opening I'd made between the two cells).

Once she was finished, I moved her burrow back to just the one cell again, let her get inside, and locked both doors to it. Then I unlocked to door to the forge, so my guys could get the item and deconstruct the forge. It was all a lot easier to do than to describe.

So what did I get? Nileslecad - "Strapsclean" - a lead left gauntlet, decorated with green glass and stone, and adorned with hanging rings of alpaca wool and llama bone. Heh, heh. Just the sort of thing a vampire would appreciate, I suppose! (Of course, if I'd been smart, I would have forbid my lead bars - and maybe everything but steel bars. But in general, when it comes to artifacts, I just take whatever I get.)

Oh, and my vampire is now ecstatic. She's still walled up in a tiny room, with nothing to eat or drink - and no one to sink her fangs into - but she's quite happy about it. Well, she was always pretty content. I let her smooth and engrave her own room. She doesn't actually use the bed, but she still "rests" occasionally. Other than that, she just stands around doing nothing - like the other three I've got locked up.
