Just a note for all terrifying biome settlers:

If you dig a channel (1 square) and pit/pasture all your animals then floor it over, no more zombies on that score.

If you have a corpse you set the tile its on for channeling and then floor that over. I think of it as a speedy way to burry the dead.

when my dwarves die i just dig a hole in the wall and put a coffin with the dwarf in it, then wall it off with any handy material laying around

on a side note, when my pets die, i dump them in a room and let them rise again so i don't have to worry about them unless i need more room

When I embark on terrifying biomes. Any corpses that cant be butchered get put into a 1 level deep pit. Then my marksdwarves are stationed around the lip of the pit. Most efficient target practice ever.

I have immigrants turned off.  I consider it a preemptive "nobody's willing to come here", but now I have to protect the children.

Waitwaitwait, what? When did this happen?

I turned the population cap down (its in the d_init file).  The first two waves will still come, but after that you won't get anymore.    Lucky I was able to save the first waves I did get.

Crossbows are a good idea.  One of the immigrants I did get had hunter as a secondary profession.  He'll stand his ground and shoot at undead while everyone else runs.  And with nothing to hunt, I don't have to worry about him wandering out of the fortress.  I'm going to make all my non-military dwarves hunters and see how that turns out.  I wouldn't recommend it for any forts in a half-undead half-normal area though.
