my money is either on 2 thieves at the same time, or an older report from a thief some time ago that wasn't old enough to be removed. I've never had anyone survive teared brains. Bruised brains, yes, torn? no. And certainly not parrying afterwards

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One hit, one kill. Saguaro wood training axe. They really DON'T make goblins like they used to. The dwarf was only competent with axes btw, he got a head injury part way through training so had to pull him out.
Why training axe? I feel that yelling "BONK!" might be neccessary there.

Also, I don't think I've seen anything survive a torn brain. Bruised brain survival is pretty rare for me, even.

I've never seen anyone survive tearing or bruising the brain. Denting the brain doesn't necessarily kill, though. I even recall someone bringing up a dwarf who had been shot in the head with a ballista, denting the brain... but not killing.

I've seen a zombie survive getting it's head chopped off.

yeah, the goblin booked it out of there with the hammer still stuck in his head. really sucked because at the time, I had other hammer dwarves that could have used it, and no means of making new ones. would have been great if I could have captured him...

Is it possible that the gobbo was some kind of night creature that's only killed by decapitation? Or are thieves and other invaders procedurally generated?

It is obviously a report from a prior kill, that thief died, combat with this thief begins with parries and ends with a knife to the spine. To confirm check the kills on the mace and compare to the murdering goblin's name, you can also find the prior kill by name in the combat reports.

I'm guessing it's too late to distinguish if that was from the macedwarf's report or the goblin's, right?

I watched a goblin maceman pulp a horses head, at least a dozen shots that all read "shattering the skull and driving the skull through the brain" but the horse didn't die.  I also had an elf torture victim ambusher survive having three different dwarves stab it in the brain with spears and then stir twist the spears in the wounds.  That elf bled to death, as they cut off an ear, both hands and a leg after stabbing him in the brain four or five times.  This was 31.25, not that I believe it has changed at all.

This thread makes me wonder if I should even bother keeping maces around.

This thread makes me wonder if I should even bother keeping maces around.
Weapons/armour research in this thread suggest that war hammers are much better than maces when comparing blunt weapon damage: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=110276.0

As such, I don't keep maces around. I prefer war hammers.

cant check the reports anymore, the fort collapsed from the tantrum spiral (things got really bad when the macedwarves husband, a hunter, went berserk and shot several dogs and any soldier sent to put him down). Im pretty sure that this goblin is the only one spotted in this fort. he made off with the hammer after it was lodged in his skull and Im pretty sure, once they are spotted, they wont detour to pick up a weapon dropped by an injured soldier or any item for that matter.

I don't know about what you guys, but what I'm seeing is a goblin taking a hammer to the skull, then turning into a fighting savant.

Look!  He gets smacked around, gets a blunt instrument in the head, and then starts parrying like crazy and dealing all sorts of nasty strikes.

Clearly, what's happening here is the hammer strike somehow impacted the brain in such a way that it fell into a new, more efficient design.  The goblin, empowered by intelligence for the very first time in his life, utilizes his newfound analyzation skills to predict and counter the clumsy dwarf's puttering whacks.  He takes a test swing at the leg, easily getting past the dwarf's defense and slicing at the dwarf's robe.  He then delivers a perfectly calculated swing, paralyzing the dwarf in a single masterful strike.

You have created a terror.
