I work around the hauling problems by not using barrels/bins in non-liquid stockpiles.

disable food hauling on farmers and have only farms harvest
that way farmers will 'pick' the shrooms on the field and leave them there for haulers to pick em up

They'll still haul the plant to a stockpile, even with 'only farmers harvest' and food hauling disabled. A workaround is to have a food stockpile adjacent to the farm with no barrels permitted, which takes food (plants only) from anywhere, and gives to the main stockpile, which only accepts from links. The farmers will just dump it there, and some hauler will come along to move it, saving the labor that counts.

This works pretty well. You kinda need to get used to it, and it takes a bit of setup but it works. You should have seed stockpiles that doesn't allow barrels as well. Have been farming for a year with 2 job cancels at most with this method.

Now to integrate dfhack's job orders system to create a completely autonomous food system. Sigh, I can only dream, I don't know how to use those commands.

NOPE.
Yeah, confirming this. No hauling labors, AND a food stockpile right next to him, but the idiot is still doing the double-round-trip from the main stockpile with a barrel.

Made it work with some no-barrel "inbound freight" stockpiles that then send their contents to the primary food stockpile for storage and stacking. Still can't stop the farmer from hauling, but at least he's only hauling a short distance now.

Switching the primary stockpile to accept from-link-only was required, though. Even with a stockpile RIGHT beside the farm, he wouldn't use it until I closed down the main stockpile.

Its not broken. You just have to use minecarts to their full advantage. Have the farm's crops go to a staging stockpile that doesn't use barrels, then link this to a main food stockpile via minecart hauling route.

Did barrel capacity get tweaked too?  Before, barrels only held 10 items total, regardless of stacks.  Now I see dorfs packing a lot more than 10 items in the barrels, one example is large prepared meal stacks that would be kept on the floor previously are getting stuffed into barrels.  Of course, this has some of my old food stockpiles thrown out of whack a little bit, since they were designed for the older way.

It's definitely different.  My 45 tile food stockpile which used to hold ~400 berries with 45 barrels now holds well over 2k.  I had to restrict it down to 9 tiles/barrels and that still holds 600+ berries.  Liquids do not seem to be altered much, my booze production and storage density appears to be the same.

I mean, sure, 2k berries is great, but 60 dwarves only eat so much. :)

Also, bins hold more or less too. They only hold 5 bars or blocks, but lots more of smaller items.

"Can work around it" and "not broken" are really two different things here. But then, it's DF, so I guess that's part of the game as much as anything else. :P

I think we may need some !!SCIENCE!! on container capacity.
