Minecart Chute
« on: May 26, 2012, 02:41:40 pm »

I'm trying out the new 34.10 and got magma forges set up 30 levels down, and I wanted to set up a minecart to ship down a lot of magnetite, for starters. I built this long track with ramps downwards. Most of it looks something like this:

xxxx
x><x where x = natural rock
xxxx

There are a few turns. I kick the cart and it goes down all the way quite rapidly, but the boulders get dropped on the way as if the cart derailed or something. This happens on one of the straight ramps consistently, the 7th or so. There is one turn before that it handles just fine.

So can you tie the stuff down so it stays in the cart or how do you do this?

No dwarves have been harmed due to my testing, only loss is a woodcutter who got chewed up by a weremammoth. But the year is still young.

It's probably a speed issue.  Try installing stops along the way and setting them to very low friction.

Hmm I'd have to redesign my chute to make room for that and do some science on it.

I also created a 30z empty space drop, but I figured if I just dump stuff down that from a cart, it will kill my smelters who come to pick it up.

What if you send a cart down a straight chute and build tracks at the bottom, will it continue along that track? Hmm I suppose it doesn't matter since a dwarf riding it wouldn't survive the drop, and you need a hauler down there to unload it anyway...?

Maybe just have the chute lead to 1 z level above smelting area, have the ore fall onto a retracting bridge, and then use this bridge attached to a level to manually drop ore one level down when you know it's clear (use doors or sth to make this safe).

Yup, thanks, that would work beautifully :) Maybe even a connect the bridge to a trigger when the cart is sent back...
