Hello! So, I finally found a vein of adamantine, and so I super excitedly started digging it up, only to strand a miner inside. Later, the miner mysteriously escaped, but now I have no way of accessing any of the ore laying on the floor in there. This is what my mine looks like:

That up staircase isn't yet built, and keeps getting suspended. I tried channeling a hole on the first level, making that a garbage dump, and dropping building materials down, but by the time I figured out how to do that, my miner mysteriously escaped, so there's no one down there to build the up staircase. Is there any way I can build something to transport dwarves up and down this mine from above? Is there a way I can shove a dwarf over the edge and into the hole in order to build the escape route? I tried making a militia of one dwarf and stationing it down there, but the u screen said the station was unreachable. Draining all this magma seems unfeasible at best. Do I have to abandon my first adamantine mine?

Hello and welcome to the forums, before anyone else jumps in I would suggest you slap a *spoiler* in that title.

As for your actual problem re: stranded miner, you can order a series of stairs be constructed through the 'b'uild menu under 'C'onstructions, you will need to order them constructed in series, from the top of the hole to the bottom, you will require both up and down stairs just as if you were designating them to be dug out.  If you have further questions please don't hesitate to ask for help.

A few points:
- When designating the building, make sure the building material is actually accessible by the builder. A suspiciously short list is a warning sign. DF can easily designate the building of an Up staircase at the bottom of a hole using the boulder down there, but if the builder is on the level above the job will never be performed as the builder can't reach the boulder.
- If there is something at the bottom of the hole you're stuffed, because the builder above cannot move the boulder to make room for the Up staircase. This means you may have to build to the side of the desired location (when that is built, you can then build from below and move the offending material).
- Note that you may get a stranded miner at the bottom with nothing but adamantine at the floor. You can either build a staircase from adamantine, or use 'd'ump to move it out of the way for someone to build from above (dismantling the staircase section will recover the ore, so that can be done as an expedient measure).

If given no other valid path dwarves will attempt to climb, this will be how your miner escaped.

You can send them down in a minecart. Maybe a meeting zone can keep them from climbing back up?
