Leaving an active fortress

Example, I'd want to play as a goblin civ, make up a fort with soldiers and everything then
just stop playing it without it being "abandoned"

Setting another fortress as dwarves to get the hardened goblins to invade or chopping them up in adventure mode.
Is it possible?

DFHack has a mode change function which can be used to do this kind of thing, although it's tricky to do and might completely corrupt your save game.
