A little demon problem
« on: May 24, 2012, 01:46:05 pm »

Hi,

So, my fortress was doing really good, Magma smelters, Gold, Iron, copper, dieng goblins screaming in the weapon traps and all that good stuff.

But the last wave of goblins contained a chamaelon fiend, who (after all goblins died in the traps) was standing in front of my locked doors.... I didnt realize, that the demons have building destroyer tags, and he stood there for one year. He (no, its a she, wearing amulets made of elves... suddenly, i like her) slaughtered some humans, elves, and a wave of migrants (i didnt like them anyway...), mainly by spiting out webs, so that the traders, guards and migrants fall on my traps and  get some bolts attached to them. And now, she brought down the door, and is rampaging trough the other parts of the fortress. I brought my civilians into a safe area, but my military force was basically none existant. Now, i quickly "recruited" 50 of my dwarfes into a militia, and they are beating on that demon, not doing all that much damage.

But, now to the question: Is there a chance, that my 50 well armed, but completely newbie dwarfes can pull off the death of that thing? They dont get killed by it all that often (some are fallen or wounded, but there is a lot of replacing material), as it prefers to spit out its webs instead of killing my dwarfes.... which im okay with ;)

Yea, every hint, maybe on which weapons i could quickly give my dwarfes to increase their chances is really much appreciated and o would HATE to loose that fortress, as its (as  i told) really good situated and is doing really good.

Btw, sorry for my english, its not my native language :)

Try to capture it. You can use a narrow bridge (not building of course, just construction) above some cage traps, so after that thing dodges something or you deconstruct the bridge using a dropping pillar cave-in it will be stunned, which is enough to trigger a cage trap on trapavoid creature.

Then make a web farm, try to make forgotten beast silk and report us the price of that silk, for sake of science.

By the way, you always have a chance that you dwarven baby will kick that demon in head, jamming the skull in and tearing brain's tissue.

Dont think this will work out, never build something like bridges, and everyone who would be able to build bridges or dig is now in cover in a very remote part of the fortress.... and that there are 3 Pages of goblins and 2 Pages of trolls rolling in the direction of the fortress will definitly dont help. But there is plenty of web in my fortress, so i might be able to get those silk data, altough this is a really expensive way to get those numbers :D

/edit: The siege was broken, one of the squad leaders ran into my weapons traps and everyone else just gone the "screw it, im out of here" way... good, but the chamaelon remains, 30 dead dwarfs on the counter, and many more wounded....

Ok, the demon is dead, Urist McLuckyidiot, one of my 40 Marksdwarfes who just got a crossbow pressed in their hands and told "here, have fun" scored a headshot through the elf bone crown... good, work, it costed 50 Dwarfes and will probably cause a tantrum spiral now.... but i will get those Silkprices of Chamaelon fiend silk :D

135 for a exeptional fiend silk trousers..... well, that was worth it

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Next time make sure you have a demon killer in place at surface level. It also helps against titans (surface FB). And you're right, wardogs are actually quite weak, and no self respecting overseer would rely on them if something else was available. On the other hand, "cry havoc and let slip the elephants of war" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

You were very lucky it was just spitting webs and didn't have vapors, spittle or dust. You're best off protecting your fort by a series of raising bridges so that you can seal your entrance in partitions. If worst came to worst, you could just lock the demon somewhere and dig a new entrance. You can always make new traps.

Yeah, these are things i will definitly consider next time. This fortress went to hell, my last non crazy miner opened up some really funny stuff, and that put the fortress to rest ;)

But it was quite insightful, it was the first time i used magma as a source of power, it was the first time i got the military properly set up (before the demon came ;) ) and on duty... and it was the first time i opened fun stuff, which was really interesting :D
