Long world gen help
« on: May 24, 2012, 11:43:11 pm »

I genned a 3000 year old pocket world. Apparently werebeasts have taken over the planet (I have 8 pages of quests to kill them for things in a half-day walk around the town) and human civilization is floundering. How can I fight against the endless hordes?
Translation: I keep getting killed in one hit or something lame, how do I train so I can kill one of them? e.g. a werebeast just punched my head off on the first turn

Fight it when it's a peasant, first off :p secondly, go train on squirrels, first. Lots, and lots of squirrels.

Choking a squirrel can lead to surprisingly great results.

Combat in Dwarf Fortress is brutal.  Any reasonably solid hit has a decent chance of being either crippling or fatal, and crippling hits will rapidly become fatal ones as your opponent continues attacking you.  Thus, the key is to not get hit.  Armor helps some, but dodging and shield use are the best.  To train these, start with a point or two in both, and find a reasonably harmless critter somewhere.  Grab it so it can't run away, switch your Dodge preference to "Stand your ground", then stand there and let it flail at you.  You'll dodge and block its attacks, training those skills as you go.  If Shield User is training faster than Dodger, you can put away the shield to train Dodger more.  If Dodger is training faster than Shield User, lie down on the ground while still holding your shield.  This seems to reduce your ability to dodge, resulting in more attacks blocked by your shield and faster training of Shield User.

High weapon skill is obviously also useful, but that takes a bit more effort to train.

why is Dwarven science always on fire?

Wrestling is much quicker, develops multiple combat-intensive attributes and improves the Fighter skill which makes all other weapons more effective.

To train weapon skills, find something that doesn't feel pain and pummel it with blunt attacks (shaft bashes, pommel strikes, etc.).

i think each werebeast type have a metal wich they aren't good against, so you will need weapon of that type, as said before figthing them as peasent is easy, and don't forget to invite some meatshield friends to your party

If they're in peasant-mode pretty much anything kills them anyway so long as you stab them hard enough.

With a 3000 year worldgen it's entirely possible he's encountered someone who is legendary in many respects even in their human form. The original werebeast (directly cursed by the gods) is immortal, even though those they bite are only affected by the transformation whilst still aging.
