How to find specific world locations for starting forts?
« on: May 24, 2012, 06:35:26 pm »

I've been playing for a while, but all my embarks were done pretty much either at random or just anywhere as long as it had metal and water.
But now I'm trying to find a place that is near a cliff/mountain and has a stream or brook at the same time, but also has lots of trees, and I'm finding it very hard to find one. In fact I haven't even found one yet.
When I look at the embark locations manually anything near mountains fits my desired location except that the terrain is flat. If I move onto a mountain tile itself, it usually will not have any trees, or no water.
And I don't think there's any way to automate a search for this kind of place.

What can I do to find this easier and faster? I'd appreciate any suggestions, thanks :)

Look for 'heavily forested' or 'woodland', and check the topography images before embarking. That's about all you can do, I guess. Volcanoes usually have steep cliffs, I've noticed.

I find a lot of these places where mountains end and woodlands, etc. start.
I usually scan the map with the cliff indicator turned on to find some suitable terrain - next I check the relative height to see what the terrain actually looks like. These two screens let you quickly find and identify all sorts of nice places like canyons, intersecting waterfalls, very high mesas... I never use the finder.
