Unusual Vampire suspect
« on: May 26, 2012, 09:30:05 am »

So, I have two dwarven babies who are pinging as vampires. One of them is eleven years old. The other is one year old.

Is this a bug, or expected? None of the parents are vamps.

what do you mean by "pinging"?

parentage does not determine vampiracy; dwarves become sterile once they become a vampire

I nicknamed every dwarf in Dwarf Therapist. These two babies are showing no nicknames in the game.

Are other babies showing nicknames?

I thought 'complained about the draft lately' meant they didn't have a door to their room.

Yes, other babies and children are showing nicknames. Also, the 11-year-old's mood just says "Urist McVampbaby has been quite content lately" with no other modifiers. The one-year-old, on the other hand, is ecstatic, and the modifiers are received water, gained a sibling, annoyed by flies, caught in the rain. His status has the "Has been without a drink for far, far too long."

EDIT: Also, a kind of follow-up. This sounds really awful, but if I chain the vampires outside my entrance, will they kill goblins?

The one-year-old

If they were born in your fort, they cannot be a vampire, unless they drink vampire blood.

modifiers are received water

Not a vamp, vamps can't drink, eat, or sleep.

Has been without a drink for far, far too long.

I think we all know the real problem here  :P

Oh, my booze is fine - I have 840 units in a 52 person fort. Geez, if I short on booze, vampires would be the least of my problems - I'm trying to avoid a tantrum spiral in the wake of a goblin ambush I wasn't really prepared for.

babies don't get alcohol, but still crave it, so they get the modifier -without a drink and explains why the first thing any child is is to drink him/herself into a stupor as soon as they are deemed old enough

the 11 year old - is a baby? then probably migrated with mother? This usually happens if you played forts or adventurers in that world before. Things like growing up only happen in your fort currently, so if you play a couple of forts each for 15 years, you might find 40 year old babies

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Ok, so apparently the whole thing was user error - I missed a line in Dwarf Therapist, thought I had nicknamed everyone, and had not. No vamp problem yet.
