How to update DF?

How do I update from 31.25 to 34.10? Do I just overwrite everything in my current install directory with the new stuff in the zip? What happens to saved games?
I've been playing for a while now, but this is the first time I want to update the game and I don't know how to do it...

You'll need to generate a new world and everything.  Saves won't be compatible so you should just make a new folder and download the new DF to it.  Delete the old version.

For most game upgrades you can move the data/save/regionX folder to a new downloaded version of DF (such as from 34.09 to 34.10), but larger jumps (such as from 31.x to 34.x) aren't transferable like that.
