To argue a counterpoint, why do you think they regret it now? Perhaps because there's a wave of people wringing their hands and saying "Oh my goodness what did you DO to that poor child?"

Here's a little secret: parents (at least the ones who are worthy of the title) live in constant mortal fear of fucking up their kids' lives. We have to make decisions on behalf of our children each and every day, and we lie awake at night hoping that they won't end up in therapy in their twenties (or dead) because of a well-intentioned choice we make today. And we have a constant chorus of people on either side of any issue, preaching and berating.

How could you vaccinate??! You could have given them autism!
How could you not vaccinate??! They could get tuberculosis!

How could you let them play with that??! They could injure themselves!
How could you forbid them from playing with that??! That could damage their self-esteem!

How could you let them watch TV??! It'll damage their brains!
How could you forbid any and all TV??! Do you want their lives to be completely devoid of fun??

How could you feed them anything that isn't organic and homemade? You know what they put in that stuff!
How could you deny them Jello? I mean...it's JELLO!

We've heard it all, from all corners. And we finally agreed that we will consider the pros and cons of the various topics, and after we come to an agreement, everyone else on the planet can kindly go fuck themselves vis-a-vis that child-rearing topic. That includes mother-in-laws, well-intentioned friends, child "experts", etc.

We came to an agreement on circumcision. Thus....

To eleviate some of your terror RedKing...

All the accusations about vaccinations have been proven false.

Also Shaken Baby Syndrome has been proven false quite a few times. (don't shake your baby. You can still hurt it through normal shaking damage. you just can't instill shaking baby syndrome)

And ultimately, it's /not/ something that's terribly important either way. Especially since the practice is fading culturally anyway, I don't even see much of a reason to get worked up over it even if someone is super-opposed.

So sorry if anything I said came across as berating.

My opinion is worth jack shit next to yours anyway. I think its wrong, personally, just like I think eating meat is wrong, personally, but it's not something I'm going to try and impose on anyone else. I know people are just making the decision they think is best for their kids.

meh, do what you will, it's your choice, and I won't try to convince you otherwise.

then only thing about circumcision I'm against is the (evidently) lack of anaesthetics. I mean, getting kicked in your gonads is bad, but doing all that without any form of anaesthetisation? that MUST hurt like fuck.
Ehh, the nerve network isn't that developed in that region until puberty anyways. Which is why you can rack yourself as a little kid without going into the fetal position (which, given the way small boys play, is a pretty common event). Not saying it probably doesn't hurt, but I wouldn't think it would hurt all that much more than getting cut on another part of the body (another reason for doing it early, IMHO).

And yeah, I'm not speaking here as a defender of circumcision as a grand cultural practice or anything. If it phases out and becomes a rarity, I'm fine with that. Just like lambchops as a style of facial hair.
Where I have a problem is people equating it with a crime against humanity (like lambchops as a style of facial hair)  :P

just a bit. I mean this is what happened after a few pages:
To be honest the thread was pretty useless to start off with (just some opinion video with no analysis going on about how bad wimmen are).  An actual discussion is an improvement.

We came to an agreement on circumcision. Thus....
I don't think anyone is particularly attacking you based on your decision, or saying that the punishment should extend back into the past retroactively.  I don't think anyone's even been calling it a "crime against humanity" either since a crime against humanity implies genocide.  They're just saying that with the current evidence (showing potential problems and few health benefits) it should be gotten rid of in the future.

You see that right there? That's what seething hatred looks like when concentrated in hair form.

Unless you're Lemmy, because...well, Lemmy *is* made of seething hatred. And at least his ties in with an awesome 70's metal mustache.

should we just call this thread 'circumcision related thread' and get it over with?
No, this is now the facial hair thread. So say we all.

Facial hair is like the formal hat.  A thing many of us nerds think can simply be affixed to the head to afford instant coolness, but in reality is a deadly minefield that few can successfully traverse.

Apparently I pull off Fedora's rather well. And suits too. Perhaps because I regularly wear both, and feel (and look) comfortable in them? (Also, they fit which is important)

RedKing, I want to know something.

Let's say that, hypothetically, your son grows up and discovers that you ordered him circumcised, and his opinion on the matter ends up falling on the anti-circumcision side of the argument. How will you feel then? You can't uncircumcise him. You made a one-way choice.

If you hadn't circumcised him and he wanted to be circumcised, that could be taken care of fairly easily.

He already answered that MetalSlimeHunt.

He basically said that being a parent is soo fully of "Ohh I'll mess up my kid" for you to really start isolating individual pieces.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
