Made an all-cavern fortress
« on: May 20, 2012, 12:37:36 pm »

Hey, everyone.  I got bored so I started out a cavern fortress.  Any tips or suggestions on what I should do?

I need a good way to chop wood without getting killed by all the fun critters, and a way to get metal without having to use the "goblinite" method (I'm staying underground).  I don't think there are any ores on the map.

P.S. I hollowed out the walls of the cavern and am going to make a network of bridges across pillars.

Invest in a military, with a sizeable amount of crossbows. Never look back.

Don't prepare too much. I did these for the while and the most fun and FUN came from little things that I didn't prepare for. Embark with one axe and one pick then forage for food and drink in the cavern.

I've wanted to mod in Troglodytes or kobolds as a playable civilization and do exactly this for ages now, but I'm only a dabbling modder. Don't hold out on us man, post some maps once you're a year or two in!

I went the opposite direction. Made humans playable and wrote journals from the perspective of a research team.

If you really want to cheese the caverns a bit, you can just wall off most of the corners of the map. If you do a good enough job you won't have to worry about the flying creatures either.

You can always try Kobold Camp.

Is it pretty much a stalemate if I embarked on a site without metals?

Not at all. You can still rely on sieges and goblinite for Iron, or traders, unless you've completely sealed off the surface.

Not necessarily, dwarves can chop wood with training axes, you really just need to watch that pick. Lose it in a hole or something and you're pretty much screwed.

Kobold camp Kobolds can't dig stone. He could embark on a cave but for the sake of consistency modding them in may be easier.

If you have deep metals, will you have a great chance of finding these ores in the caverns?
