Obsidian farming
« on: May 29, 2012, 07:55:15 am »

Anyone else find that farming obsidian in the new version is WAY too slow? A dozen or so boulders out of a 10x10 casting room is kind of low. I guess that means i have to stick to gold for all my furniture.

Yes.  I thought the amount of usable stone was supposed to work out about the same at it used to be since you get 4 blocks per stone.  Except, of course, you can't build furniture or crafts out of blocks.

It also makes it hard to train masons. Sure 4 blocks are produced, but only one job is performed.

Making the game harder is a good thing!

You'd have to alternate levels of magma and water to do it effectively. Timing would be difficult but doable.

Is it harder, or just more time-consuming?

If it takes longer to obtain an unlimited amount of obsidian I'm okay with that. Makes sense to me that only a few chunks would be usable in a process like this anyway. You'd have a high amount of flawed obsidian glass which probably wouldn't look too pretty.

I'm not sure I understand the problem. Just make the farm 4x larger. Both magma and water are unlimited an will regenerate fast enough to keep up with your ability to haul out the stone that drops. A legendary miner will tear through an obsidian farm that's 4 times larger in nothing flat. A 20x20 farm will still drop 100 stone. 6 pulls and you've got a legendary mason or stonecrafter or mechanic. The only thing that takes longer is the mining - and that's far and away the fastest element in this whole process - and now you can even run a minecart to the door of your farm on a loop track, set it to autodump next to the masons workshop and return to the start. Lay a stone stockpile on the floor the farm and link it to the stop. Will probably be even faster than before.
