XXarmorXX what?
« on: April 05, 2012, 11:13:56 pm »

So I have some metal armor I made in the first season of my fort.  ~2 years later some of it is at XX level of degredation, mentioned as "this item is mangled" in its description.  I know this happens to clothing but does it happen to metal armor now too?  Interestingly, my high boots have not been affected so far.  I have some guesses as to what could have caused it:

- Armor degrades too now?

- Long periods outside in a hot, rainy biome?  Seriously its always raining in my embark, and I have the military patrolling around the entrance outside.

- Damage from combat?  The military has done plenty of fighting, but no one has died or gotten worse then a couple broken bones.  Plus combat damage hasn't been added yet I thought.

- Temperature damage?  None of the items have been dipped in magma or even been near the stuff for any length of time, but they are steel in any case.  I have fought a forgotten beast made of snow, which was probly pretty cold.  There are some temperature based effects in the mod I am using (LFR) but I haven't actually unlocked or found any of those yet.  In any case if steel mail shirts are taking damage from temperature I would think the dwarf wearing it would fair worse.

- Forgotten beast goo?  I blasted through 3 forgotten beasts in quick succession.  One of them was the snow beast and one of them had noxious (but not toxic or lethal) emissions which got all over everything.

- Mod stuff?

i don't think i've seen it on armor.  It can happen to furniture that's toppled by building destroyers, or stuff that gets damaged but not completely melted by fire/magma.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

armor does degrade, I've seen it do many times. My suspicion is that it takes damage in combat, whenever it deflects a blow, because I've seen the worst degraded armor after sending 2 adamantine armored newbies to fight an animalmen camp. They won, but not before pages after pages of "Serpent man spearman stabs Urist in the head with his tunnel tube spear, but the attack is deflected".

Based on this bug report I believe that what is happening is that armor that is dropped in areas which would normally cause decay -- that is, refuse stockpiles or maybe even just being left on the ground (or outside on the ground) is causing armor to decay even though it isn't supposed to.

I've had it on armor and other stuff in a general stockpile that also accepted things like bones and skulls. Since that made it also a refuse stockpile, everything started to degrade.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Well, that would explain why my armor degraded then...Whoops! Interesting point: this (buggy) behavior doesn't affect weapons, shields, or other items. Just clothing items and armor.

If you hit a dwarf with moving water with sufficient strength it will knock the baby out of the mother's arms.  The water can then be used to sweep the baby into a well or cistern for drowning.  The device which does this can also double as a mist generator.

That's because clothing is supposed to decay on the refuse pile, to rid the fortress of cast-of, worn-out clothing.

It won't degrade on the ground, but if you drop it on a refuse pile then it will.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Also, in one fort I had, a child claimed a goblin's copper mask before I could designate it for melting, and it was slowly wearing away like other clothing.
