Goblin Ambush
« on: May 16, 2012, 02:24:05 pm »

Just had a Goblin Ambush in a fort I just started, have 26 dwarfs. They showed up with 5 goblins, but my loan axedwarf went out to meet them and simply butchered them, sustaining only a shoulder bruise.

My question is, do the goblins react to how easily their ambushs are dealt with? I did not get any baby snatchers this time around, and I was wondering that since my axedwarf destroyed them, if they would send a much larger force next. Instead of just getting sieged when I get 80 dwarves.

Damm, actually just got another room. My traps got most of them, but my axedwarf got the rest.

Goblin ambush/siege strength is a function of how much wealth your fortress produces and AFAIK is unrelated to the fate of previous attacks, with the exception of whether or not siegers show up on mounts. You Kobolds will send ambushes if their thieves are successful.

at a very wealthy fort with low population, I could not get sieges (less than 80 dwarfs. Despite wiping out a lot of ambushes in the past, they showed up with 4 squads, about 12 man each, and 6 snatchers. when I passed 80 dwarfs, the first siege was smaller than that

I'm at 90/120 dwarves, year embark+3, with 664M created wealth and 453K exported wealth.  Still can't attract more than one Goblin civ out of 30 that are within 8 world tiles.

So far, the best siege they've sent is 75 goblins.  Kind of disappointing.

you only ever get one civ....

just like you only get your home civ dwarf caravan, one human city caravan and one elf tribe caravan

Ok, good to know.  So no point in having more than one goblin civ! ( for fortress mode at least )  That simplifies worldgen immensely. :)

it does depend a lot on your worldgen.  The power of the goblin civ as well as its proximity makes a difference.

it does depend a lot on your worldgen.  The power of the goblin civ as well as its proximity makes a difference.

I've seen no change in size or frequency of sieges either with 30 goblin civs, 4 civs, 17k goblins, 27k goblins, or 40-50k goblins, 1000 per fortress or 10,000 per fortress.  Any and all combinations have the same result.  Being within 1 world/region tile or 8 world/region tiles makes no difference that I can tell.

It's a shame, really.  I was hoping it WOULD make a difference, and there would be some reason to have multiple very large goblin civs near an embark.  In practice, I've not seen any difference.  I've embarked adjacent (as in, as close as you can get) to the only 10k goblin fortress in a pocket world and it's an identical experience, siege-wise, compared to embarking equidistant to three 1k goblin fortresses, all with different parent goblin civs.

In no case did I see a siege larger than 65-75 goblins during the first 5 years.  I'd be happy to hear of better results, though.  ;D

what you want is probably scheduled for the army arc, or whatever it was called
